Expanding the Role of a Yoga Teacher: Content Creation
Yoga isn’t just about physical practice—it’s about educating interested individuals on the deeper aspects of yoga, including philosophy and health.
As yoga teachers, we’re often asked to expand our skill set beyond teaching a class. Running a yoga business requires more than just guiding a practice—you need to have an understanding of content creation, to market your services, build a community, and connect with others in the industry. While there are courses available to teach these skills, I’ve found the quickest way to improve is by creating content and seeing what works. Analytics and market research are helpful in understanding what resonates with audiences.
Many yoga teachers create content on platforms like YouTube, where they offer classes or tips, or on Spotify, sharing playlists. Social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok are also useful for reaching a broader audience and staring conversations. Personally, I use Instagram to promote my services, provide educational content and useful tips. Before posting, I do my research and collect evidence on the topic.
Creative Process: Launching a podcast as a Yoga teacher
My content creation is influenced by my public health background. I wanted to merge wellbeing and holistic health, which led me to explore communication channels beyond social media. Launching a podcast opened up a new space where I could reach individuals interested in going deeper into the holistic health industry and how to make informed choices. One challenge I noticed in the community - yoga teachers, students and those interested in wellbeing and health - was the lack of attention paid to credible evidence behind the information being shared.
Social media, besides being a creative outlet, offers a space to connect with individuals who aren’t necessarily interested in yoga classes but are curious in learning about its health-aspect. People are more mindful and want to make conscious choices, especially regarding health. Exploring beyond typical information channels, tuning in to a podcast, offers opportunities for diverse insights and shared experiences.
Often, information online can be misleading. That’s why podcasts offer a better format for deeper conversations. Podcasting involves researching, preparing, recording, and editing - it takes time for the host to shape relevant points that spark conversations. Initially, I wasn’t sure how to blend public health with yoga teachings in a podcast, but the creation process helped me develop my first episode.
As someone who is concious about the environment, like many of you, I l explored ustainability and discovered the term greenwashing - something we all encounter, especially in fashion. Greenwashing is when companies mislead consumers into thinking products are environmentally friendly—when they are not. I felt needed more discussion, as it appears in other wellbeing areas too - from yoga-brands to sumpplements and skincare.

Looking ahead, expanding my content creation skills will be key to my growth as a yoga teacher and business owner. Whether through podcasting, social media, or collaboration, these skills allow me to share my knowledge in engaging ways. If you are a yoga teacher that hasn never been very tech-savy, know you are not alone. There are many free resources online that can help you start your creative yourney.
Just like yoga - it’s all about consistent practice.
